Thai Airways Economy Long Haul Review: 777 - A Surprisingly Pleasant Flight?
The Pre-Flight Experience
My recent long-haul flight with Thai Airways on their Boeing 777 was a bit of a gamble. Economy long haul can be a mixed bag, and frankly, I'd heard mixed reviews about Thai Airways' economy class. Check-in at Heathrow was smooth, albeit busy. Boarding was relatively efficient, though a slight delay pushed us back about 30 minutes. Nothing major, and the staff were polite and helpful throughout the check-in and boarding process. First impressions were positive, which was a promising start.
The Seat and Cabin
The seats themselves were standard economy, not particularly spacious, but not cramped to the point of discomfort either. Legroom was adequate for my height (5'8"), though taller passengers might find it a bit snug. The seat pitch felt average for a long-haul economy flight, allowing for a reasonable amount of recline without impacting the passenger behind me too much. The cabin felt clean and well-maintained. The lighting was nicely dimmed during the flight, aiding in sleep, and the cabin crew did a good job of keeping things tidy.
In-Flight Entertainment and Amenities
Thai Airways' in-flight entertainment system was a decent surprise. The selection of movies, TV shows, and music was surprisingly extensive, and the touchscreen interface was responsive and easy to use. Noise-canceling headphones are not provided, however, which would have been a welcome addition on a long haul flight. The provided headphones were basic, but functional. They offered a selection of snacks and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, at various points throughout the flight. The food was actually quite good for economy; I was impressed with the quality and flavour of my meals, and there were vegetarian options available.
Service from the Crew
The cabin crew were the real highlight of the flight. They were consistently friendly, attentive, and efficient. They proactively offered drinks and assistance, and were always approachable with a smile. Their professionalism and warmth made a significant difference to the overall experience. Even during periods of high demand they remained calm and managed to assist everyone with a friendly demeanor.
Overall Verdict
My Thai Airways economy long-haul flight on the 777 exceeded my expectations. While the seats weren't luxurious, the excellent service, decent in-flight entertainment, and surprisingly palatable food more than compensated. Would I fly Thai Airways economy again? Absolutely. It proved to be a comfortable and enjoyable long-haul experience. It’s a great option for budget-conscious travellers who value good service and don't necessarily need premium amenities. It's certainly worth considering if you're looking for a decent long-haul flight for a competitive price.
